Wake Forest University Writing Center
Education
The renovation of the Wake Forest University Writing Center was driven by a growing demand for accessible, welcoming spaces that better support student learning and one-on-one academic engagement. Working closely with the Writing Department, STITCH Design Shop partnered with faculty and staff to understand how students use the center, where they linger, how they collaborate, and what helps them feel comfortable seeking support.

The entry sequence establishes clarity and ease, with a dedicated touchdown zone for coats, personal belongings, and student resources framing the entry and intuitively guiding visitors toward a centrally located information desk. From there, the space unfolds into a variety of learning environments tailored to different modes of engagement.
Railway-carriage-inspired meeting spaces provide acoustically controlled settings for focused one-on-one tutoring and independent work, while larger, open collaboration areas support group sessions and peer interaction. Thoughtfully integrated acoustic treatments enhance privacy without sacrificing openness, and flexible furniture allows the space to adapt to evolving needs throughout the academic day.
Natural light plays a critical role in shaping the experience. Elaborate window cutouts pull daylight deep into the interior, creating an airy, energized atmosphere that reinforces a sense of transparency and inclusivity. A lively yet intentional color palette ties the space together, giving the Writing Center a distinct identity that feels both academic and inviting.
The result is a highly functional, student-focused environment that strengthens access to academic resources, encourages meaningful interaction, and supports Wake Forest University’s commitment to student success. The renovated Writing Center not only improves the effectiveness of tutoring services but also fosters a sense of belonging—transforming the space into a hub for learning, connection, and growth.
